  • The Voice: Battle of Champions premiered on February 23.
  • AJ Robinson gave a memorable performance covering one of Lainey Wilson’s hits.
  • The 14-year-old singer earned a chair turn from John Legend.

Lainey Wilson is known to inspire countless young women and girls with her bold style, fierce attitude, and beautiful voice, but this week, it became evident that her influence extends to young men, too.

The Voice: Battle of Champions kicked off with a two-hour season premiere on Monday, February 23, during which 14-year-old AJ Robinson took the stage for a Blind Audition. As soon as the high schooler started singing Lainey Wilson’s “Watermelon Moonshine,” all of the coaches started bobbing along. Within seconds, John Legend turned his chair.

“What made me push my button was, I loved your tone,” John told AJ. “I love the way your voice kind of floats. It was airy, and it has a richness that sounds way richer than it should sound when you’re only 14 years old. And I am ready to help you do really well on this show, AJ.”

While Lainey has yet to comment on AJ’s performance, many fans believe that he served her song well. “@aj_robinson_music, you did such a great job on @laineywilson's song! I know she'll be very happy to hear you sing it. As soon as you started singing, I knew I had to add you to my Voice Official App team,” one Instagrammer commented on the clip. “14?!?? Insaneeee,” someone else wrote. “Wow, he sounds so good for 14! I can't believe he has so [much] passion and control for his age,” another fan chimed in.

As surprising as AJ’s performance was, it’s just the beginning for this new era of The Voice. With new rules like the Triple Turn Competition (where coaches are competing to nab the most artists who earned triple chair turns) and the Super Steal (the one-time advantage awarded to the coach who wins the Triple Turn Competition), The Voice: Battle of Champions is on track to be more entertaining than ever before. Tune in to NBC on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET to catch new episodes of the can’t-miss singing competition.
